Storytelling that extends to the big screen
Between late 2013 and late 2018, our founder was committed to the production of her BAFTA nominated feature film, APOSTASY, backed by BBC, BFI, Creative England and Great Point Media. From packaging and pitching a project which broke many of the tried and tested ‘rules’, to making sure that the film reached its widest possible audience, through to achieving a BAFTA nomination, this case study is a prime example of end-to-end production.
Critically acclaimed, BAFTA nominated filmmaking
The initial development process spanned an intensive 12-month period. Marcie produced the development of the treatment, script iterations, budgets, schedules, location recces, development contracts, supporting statements, teaser films, social media and marketing strategies and casting workshops. She was supported by wider members of the Frank & Lively team, including Ellen and Amelia, whose efforts helped to prove the viability of this film to funders. In March 2015, Marcie secured funding to produce APOSTASY, a Frank & Lively and iFeatures Production.
In Oct 2016, the film was produced and filmed in Manchester with a dedicated crew of over forty talented filmmakers. Marcie had particularly passionate ambitions for the film’s gender diversity. As a result, 50% of the 40+ crew and 100% of the film trainees were female. It solidly passed BFI’s ‘three ticks’ diversity programme, employing women in front of and behind the camera.
Delivering Britain’s Best Film of the Year
In 2017, APOSTASY premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival, followed by countless festival screenings across the world. The film’s cinematic release in 2017 by Curzon was met with four and five star reviews from publications including the Guardian, The Times and The Financial Times. APOSTASY has since received a BAFTA nomination, six British Independent Film Award nominations – including Breakthrough Producer for our founder – and was named Best British Film of the Year at the SCREEN awards. In total, APOSTASY has been the recipient of 22 nominations and five wins to date. It was described by Peter Bradshaw of the Guardian as a “supremely intelligent and gripping drama”, as “one of the year’s strongest British dramas” by The Hollywood Reporter and “an audacious and powerful feature debut” by SCREEN Daily.
